A notary public is a person chosen by the state to help make sure important papers are signed correctly. They watch people sign papers to make sure everything is done right and fairly.

Notaries have to follow special rules in Wisconsin. They can't help if the papers don't follow these rules. Also, notaries can't fill out papers for you or give you legal advice.

Notaries may not always be able to help. If they think something is wrong or unclear with the papers, they won't sign them.

Here are the rules that Notaries and Requesters must follow:

  • The library offers notary public service for free, but only at the library.
  • You need to sign the Notary Log when you use notary services.
  • You must show a valid photo ID with your signature, like a driver’s license or passport.
  • Documents in languages other than English can't be notarized.
  • The notary must be able to talk directly to the person signing the papers.
  • It's better to make an appointment for notary service. Notary services are not available within 15 minutes of the library closing.
  • Notary services are extra duties for the library staff, so walk-ins might have to wait.
  • Notaries follow Wisconsin Notary Laws and won't notarize documents that don't follow these rules. They can't fill out papers for you or give legal advice.
  • Your document must be completely filled out, except for where the notary will sign and stamp.
  • Notaries can't make copies of important records like birth or death certificates. They also can't take depositions.
  • If your document needs a special certificate, you need to know which one. The notary can't decide for you.
  • If your document needs witnesses, bring people who know you and have valid photo IDs.
  • Notary service is not guaranteed. If there are any problems or uncertainties with the document, the notary won't sign it.
